Introduction
Chanel is known around the world, particularly among people devoted to designer bags. Many women worldwide hope to own at least one or two. When bags are bought and sold, however, the recurring question is often, “Which Holo is it?” This guide introduces the term.
What is a Hologram or Holo number?
On Chanel examples made during periods when serial-number stickers were used, the Hologram number range can help place a bag within an approximate production period. The sticker appears inside the bag, but consistency with a date range does not authenticate the item by itself.
Stickers and Authenticity Cards can be lost, replaced or imitated. Authentication requires examination of the full item, including its construction, materials, applicable serial system and provenance. Useful consistency indicators associated with the relevant period include:
- On examples consistent with that period, the Hologram Sticker should normally be firmly attached, although adhesion can change with age or repair
- Where both an original Hologram Sticker and Authenticity Card are present, their serial numbers should correspond
- On Hologram Sticker series whose design includes a slashed zero, the numeral 0 should show a diagonal line
- The Hologram Sticker should carry the interlocking CC CHANEL logo where that feature is expected for the series
Production-year table and the 2021 handbag transition
Independent specialist references date Chanel's transition for handbags from serial-number stickers and Authenticity Cards to an internal serial plate to April 2021, beginning with the 21A collection. Chanel's official anti-counterfeit page describes its broader protection work but does not publish detailed authentication identifiers. The plate and any single serial feature should therefore be treated as period-consistency information, not standalone proof of authenticity. The plate should not be described as a publicly scannable NFC authenticity check.
Some small leather goods, including certain Vanity models, card holders and wallets, could continue with Hologram Sticker and Card systems after the handbag transition. Specialist references may associate Holo 32 with certain small items in 2022, but this does not date the overall handbag transition to 2022. Authentication still requires assessment of the full item, including construction, materials, the applicable serial system and provenance.
